The Widow ELISA KATARINA SJÖBERG and her late husband, Carl Gustaf Sjöberg, are both old settlers and are well-known among their countrymen in Travis County, where they have lived since the early immigrant days. They both grew up in Bringetofta, Småland, were born in the same year, 1839, and immigrated to America in 1867. When he set out for Texas, she went to Swedona, ILL., where she only stayed for two years. She came to Austin, Texas, and married Sjöberg in 1869. Her father was a soldier in Sweden, and his name was Anders Johannesson; Sjöberg’s father, Johannes Danielson, was a farmer and a shoemaker. The children of the family are: John, born in 1871, Gustaf, 1873, Hannah, 1880, and Joseph, 1883. Two daughters, Anna and Augusta, are dead. The sons are living and farming on the family farm in Delvalle, a few miles south of Austin, and a daughter, Mrs. Martin, has her home nearby.
The Sjöbergs are charter members of the Swedish Methodist Congregation in Austin and belong to the first group who spiritually broke ground for this church in Texas, with Pastor Charnquist as their leader. Mr. Sjöberg, with his steadfast faith, great talents, unselfishness and rich spiritual experiences, was a pillar of strength for the congregation during his lifetime. He had a great interest in its success, was a supportive brother in prayer to the minister, and his place never stood empty during the service when he was still healthy. He was a Christian gentleman, known far and wide. Whether it concerned the church or family interests, Mrs. Sjöberg was a faithful supporter at her husband’s side, sacrificing and sympathizing until death separated them. He died on July 27,1916.
Mr. Sjöberg had there sisters, Mrs. Carl Berkman, dead, Mrs. Sofia Sandberg and Mrs. Carl Sandberg, and a brother, Claus Sjöberg, all living in and around Austin. Among them, Carl G. was the first to emigrate. His elderly widow lives in the family home in Delvalle, surrounded by children and grandchildren.
