J. EDWARD CARLSON lives just east of Brady. He was born in 1854 in Högagärde, Norra Sandsjö, Småland. His father, Carl Nelson, was a farmer and lived in Högagärde all his life. The son grew up there, was educated and stayed on the farm until 1891 when he emigrated. He too went to Texas, as so many other people from Småland, and he first came to Hutto. Mr. Carlson married Ida Charlotta Berggren while he was still in Sweden. She was born in Sjöarp, Höreda, in 1864.
The family started leasing land when they first came to this country, both in Hutto and in Taylor. The Carlsons joined the Swedish Methodist Church and took part in its growth in both these places. Mr. Carlson helped build the church in Hutto, and was one of the members of the committee that made the purchase of the Methodist Church in Taylor. Since the family settled in Brady, they have taken an active part in the activities of the church there.
In 1905 the family moved to Brady from Waterloo, a community northeast of Taylor. Mr. Carlson bought a piece of beautiful and fertile land near the city, and he has later added more acres. He has built a large and modern home there, and is comfortable in many ways. The Carlsons have nine children; eight sons and a daughter. They are still unmarried, but will branch out into a large family with time. Their names and birthdates are: Gustaf 1884, Carl 1886, who has lived in California for three years and is a carpenter; Robert 1893, Arthur 1895, Albert 1897, Sigurd 1900, Harald 1902, Ebba 1905, and Elving 1907. They are nice and well-behaved children with an interest in education and industriousness.
