C. J. SKOG . We find Claes Johan Skog and his future wife, Hedvig Larsberg, in the large group of 120 emigrants who left their homeland in 1870 to see their dream of a better life realized in Texas. They belong to the Swedish pioneers in Texas and are deserving of a place in the cultural history of the Swedes in Texas. C. J. Skog was born in Svartorp parish, Småland, in 1850. His father, Jonas Skog, was a soldier. He was also a skilled carpenter, blacksmith and shoemaker. His son, Claes, helped in the building of the church in Svartorp, and almost lost his life when a large stoneblock fell.
After he came to Manor, Texas, he first had to work hard to pay for his passage. He then worked for the railroad as a bridge-builder.
In 1871, he married the above-mentioned Hedvig Larsberg. She was born in Barkeryd parish, Småland, in 1847, where her father. Per Olof Larsberg, was a coach driver at Långåsa. Her parents came to Texas in 1875. They are both dead and buried in New Sweden. Her father died in 1891 and her mother in 1902.
The C. J. Skog family leased land near Manor for ten years. In 1881 they bought prairie-land in New Sweden. That particular piece of land was not considered good for cultivation because it was fairly flat; but it has been proven to be best in the entire cotton-growing district. It is now one of New Sweden’s most attractive farms. In addition to this farm, Skog also owns a farm in Jourdanton, Texas. They have the following children: Hanna, born in 1872, Oscar, 1874, Carl, 1877, Sarah, 1879, Richard, 1881, Eva, 1884, Eric, 1887, Frida, 1890 and Beda, 1892.
The family have been members of the New Sweden Congregation since its founding, and few have contributed to the work of the church like this family. Mrs. Skog was until her death in 1913, a faithful wife, a tender mother, and a tireless worker for her family. In the congregation she has left behind a bright memory. Mr. Skog has served as deacon for seven years and for fourteen years as a Sunday school leader, a post he still holds. He also gets the credit for a great contribution to the establishment of a cemetery fund. He was in charge of the selling of stocks when the New Sweden Telephone Company was founded, and he is now a boardmember of that company and its chairman.
