ERIK GUSTAP NELIN lives in the old Swedish community east of Brady in McCulloch County. He owns a large farm near the Frisco railroad, and the station there is named Nelin. He and his family have lived there since 1900, when he bought this property. Before that he leased land in that area for a few years. He is a farmer and raises cattle.
Mr. Nelin was born in 1862 in Hardemo parish, Nerike, Sweden, and is the son of Carl Johan Nelin, a shoemaker. The son learned the same trade, but like so many of his countrymen, he gave up his old trade when he came to this country and took up another occupation. He immigrated at the age of twenty, and came to Williamson County in Texas. He did not stay there very long, but the following year, 1883, he leased land near San Saba, Texas.
In 1890 Nelin married Ellen Maria Söderling from Stora Mellösa parish in Södermanland where her father, Olof Söderling, was a skipper. She came to Richland, Texas in 1890, when she was 16 years old. The Nelins have had eight children and six are still living. They are: Carl 1891, Arthur 1893, Emil 1896, Conrad 1898, Edith 1901, and Ivar 1903. The children belong to the Presbyterian Church in East Sweden.
