A. M. DAHLIN and his wife, Lovisa, born Johnson, are among those of our countrymen who came to Texas in the early days of the immigration. They both came here from Småland in 1870, settled in Austin, and married two years later. They have lived there ever since then, and both witnessed and took part in the development of the city and the Swedish communities. Mr. Dahlin is the son of Johannes Monson, a crofter at Ulfnås in Öggestorp parish, where he was born in 1849. In Sweden he learned the trade of the miller and was a gardener, but even so, he joined the large group of emigrants who at this time left Småland for Texas. For the first seven years in Austin, Dahlin was employed as a gardener for Mr. Ben Townsend, and for the following seven years, he had his own business. After a short time as custodian at the University, he was employed in the old, well-known Morley Brothers Drug Store, here in town. Dahlin worked here for eighteen years. In 1906, he and his son, Gustaf Dahlin, bought the Lone Star Bakery on East 6th Street. Here, father and son carried on a successful and profitable business, Mrs. Dahlin was born in 1848 in Svartorp, and married Dahlin in 1872. Of their ten children, five have died at a young age. The remaining are the sons, Gustaf and David, both bakers, and the daughters, Jennie, Esther and Alma.
In his younger years, Mr. Dahlin took an active part in the church, particularly the Swedish Methodist Church. In later years, Mr. Dahlin has taken a great interest in different societies and belongs to several organizations. He is a member of W.O.W., W.C.,K. O. T. M., Odd Fellows and Redman, and he is honored with the highest post in all of them.
