CARL G. HOLMSTROM, a farmer near Jonah, was both a farmer and a miller in Sweden. He emigrated in 1888, and came to Decker. He worked for Mr. Carl Lundgren for the first year. After two years in Austin, he moved to Willliamson County where he started farming. He was a tenant farmer for twelve years. Mr. Holmstrom moved to Jonah with his family in 1905. The previous year he had bought a beautiful farm near the village on the San Gabriel river. Mr. Holmstrom was born in Jönköping in 1869, and is the son of Per Johan Johanson, a farmer, who was also a carpenter. In 1894 he married Anna Sofia Fröjd, who was born in Almesåkra, Småland, in 1872. Her father was a farmer and his name was Anders Fröjd. She immigrated to America in 1891, and came to Round Rock, Texas, in the company of the widow Lovisa Peterson of Taylor. The Holmstroms have six children who are still living. Two have died. Oscar, 1895; Gustaf, 1897; Tom, 1901; Bertha, 1903; Lambert, 1905; and Frances, 1909. The couple belongs to the Swedish Free Church in Brushy. Mr. Holmstrom is a cheerful and friendly person who makes friends early both among Swedes and Americans. He takes a great interest in community activities, and has been a representative for the Jonah public schools for several years. He is also part owner of the local gin company. A paternal uncle of Mr. Holmstrom, Gustaf Holmstrom, came here before the Civil War, and afterwards he settled in Minnesota where he died at an old age.

    Jonah Swedes - 1940
This photo was taken at the Gustaf E. Johnson farm & house. This was shortly after Gustaf passed away in Michigan in 1939. May have been some kind of memorial by his old Jonah friends C.G. Holmstrom and C.J. Wegstrom and brother Axel Johnson. Imagine a print was sent to Michigan to my grandmother Hilma as she also knew these old Swedes.

The 1893 letter is the earliest I have of him asking wether he could come to C.G. Holmstrom in RR as a 20 year old. Have others before he finally came.

The 1901 letter was his first after returning to Sweden to find a wife after no luck in Texas. Also have a serious of letter for over 9 months back to Holmstrom including his getting married and coming back to Texas in Feb 1902. That must have been tough crossing the North Sea and Atlantic in Feb.

David Skoglund translated all of these letters and his mother typed them for my mother, after my dad passed away in 1989.
