The Swedes are spread out over most of Texas; hardly
an area can be mentioned where there is no Swede, either living permanently or
as a temporary worker. It is in the nature of the Swede to settle where there
are other Swedes, often for religious reasons. This is particularly the case
with families who want to raise their children with the influence of the
Swedish Church. Every church has tried to fill this need in each place where
there are Swedes gathered. In the coastal area, there are some small places
where there are only a few Swedes, and where there is no Swedish church. But
they can barely be called Swedish communities, and they are served by
representatives of the different churches nearby. Among those are Bishop, near
Corpus Christi, Caranchua, Palacios, Collegeport, Bay City and Leon Valley.
Victoria had quite a few Swedes in the 90’s, and it even had an organized
Swedish church, but the first settlers eventually moved inland. A new
colonization company was started in the spring of 1914, in Jourdanton, Atascosa
County, but it was dissolved because of.the unrest caused by the war.
The most populated Swedish communities are located
in the central and northwestern parts of Texas.
