BISHOP

(Severin)

Biographies Alf. L. Scott and T. J. Westerberg

Since the big prairie began to be cut up and colonized in this part of Nueces County, Texas, even the Swedish people settled here in the later years and took up farming, but the biggest part of the land is still pasture-land.  Nueces County was organized in 1846 and was at that time of such a size in that it could have been regarded as a kingdom. In 1848, several other counties broke off from it, but Nueces still had a surface area of nearly three thousand square miles. Two other counties have been divided since then: Jim Wells in the year 1911, and Kleberg, 1913, so that Nueces now has an area of about eleven hundred square miles.

The most famous city in the county is the city by the sea, Corpus Christi, with a population of 8,222 in the year 1910, known for its seaside resorts and fishing, an often visited place by tourists during the summer months.  The Swedish community is located in the southern part of Nueces County. The pleasant little town of Bishop is located directly beside the St. Louis, Brownsville & Mexico railway. Main products are cattle production, corn and cotton. The religious preference is Swedish Lutheran.
